Ceramic filter operation

In general, the smaller the pore size of a filter and the more complex the path the water takes through the filter medium, the more effective it is at removing particles from water. The ceramic material has a small and complex pore structure, making it an ideal filter medium. The pore structure of Doulton® and British Berkefeld® ceramic drinking water filters is precisely controlled. This expertise gives candles the necessary pore structure to filter a wide variety of waterborne contaminants throughout the life of the filter. To understand the size of pores smaller than 1 micron, it is enough to know that the width of human hair is 100 microns. Doulton® and British Berkefeld® water filters have been continuously manufactured in the UK for over 185 years. In the 19th century, the River Thames was both the main water source and the sewage system for London. Henry Doulton® discovered that filtering water through porous ceramic could prevent people from becoming ill from cholera and other waterborne diseases. Fairey Industrial Ceramics Limited (FICL) is the sole manufacturer of the world-famous Doulton® and British Berkefeld® ceramic drinking water filters. All ceramic water filter products are manufactured at FICL's factory in North Staffordshire, England, the traditional area of the ceramic industry in the UK.

All stages of FICL's drinking water filter production process comply with strict BS EN ISO 9001 quality standards. FICL drinking water filters are certified to the highest international testing standards, NSF and WRAS.

Our high-quality standards are the reason why Doulton® and British Berkefeld® brands are sought after worldwide in household water filtration systems.

The company named the first ceramic filter, which mechanically cleaned particles from water up to 0.5 microns with a simple ceramic filter, Sterasyl. Over the years, as our water filtration needs have changed, this ceramic filter has been technologically developed and adapted to today's needs by adding silver ions, activated carbon granules (Super Sterasyl), heavy metal (Ultra Sterasyl), and fluoride (Ultra Fluoride Sterasyl) cleaning features.
