What is ORP?
ORP (Oxidation Reduction Potential) is a measure of water's cleanliness and its ability to break down contaminants. It shows the oxidizing or reducing power of a solution in millivolts (mV). If the measurement result is positive, the water has an oxidation effect (rusting, destructive effects). If it is negative, the water has antioxidant properties, meaning it prevents rusting.
Examples from Daily Life:
• Rust on iron and a slice of brown apple are simple examples of oxidation.
• Oxidation in the body can lead to various diseases.
• Oxidizing foods and drinks adversely affect the chemical structure of body fluids.
• Foods containing negative hydrogen ions, such as organic vegetables, provide positive contributions to the body.
Variability of ORP Values:
• The ORP values of foods and drinks vary widely.
• For health, foods with negative ORP values should be preferred.
• For example, alcoholic beverages, soda, and meat are strong oxidizers.
• While freshly squeezed orange juice has an ORP value of -100 to -200 mV, packaged orange juice can go up to +200 mV.
ORP Value of Alkaline Ionized Water:
• Tap water typically has a positive ORP value between +250 to +400 mV, meaning it has no oxidation reduction power.
• Bottled waters usually show similar values between +200 to +300 mV.
• Water from an ionizer, on the other hand, has an ORP value between -200 to -500 mV; it has high antioxidant power.
• Values below -550 mV are considered very powerful for the human body and are not recommended for consumption.
